Painful Bladder Syndrome

What it is

A complex pain condition (also known as Interstitial Cystitis) that involves pain, frequency and urgency. While this is thought to be a problem of the bladder, evidence exists supporting that it may involve the pelvic muscles and pelvic floor muscles near the bladder.

Symptoms

Can be characterized by bladder dysfunction frequency and urgency, and pain in the area above the pubic bone. Can coexist with other pelvic conditions including Irritable Bowel Syndrome and even migraine headaches. May be triggered by surgery, viral illness, or physical or psychological trauma.

Treatment

Pelvic Physical Therapy for Painful Bladder Syndrome may include therapies for trigger points and connective tissue massage, reverse Kegels, stress management and pelvic muscle relaxation techniques, and bladder retraining.
